A few weeks ago, I got an email from a singer-songwriter named Tyler Gelrud. The Orange County, CA native, who was in Montreal at the time, was announcing his eventual arrival to Knoxville and the release of his new EP, Promenade, under the performing name "Lyonn."
"I have been previously, and I really think Tennessee is a great place for me to build a home base with Lyonn," he explained, filling my heart with pride for my hometown. If Gelrud can stick it out through the summer humidity of East Tennessee, he will find a supportive music community here in Knoxville. Any time an out-of-town musician chooses Knoxville as their home base, I get really excited, especially one as talented as Lyonn.
The Promenade EP was released a little over a week ago, and it is available on iTunes, Bandcamp (For FREE), and a number of other digital sites. This EP has a lot going for it. Gelrud has a vocal quality that is reminiscent of Chris Carrabba of Dashboard Confessional which is perfect for its whimsical tone. Centering around playful romanticism, the subject matter overall is not too heavy. It's a collection of fun love songs that are gift wrapped for any movie soundtrack in a meet-cute situation.
If you want to hear more Lyonn, you can check out his website, or bandcamp. Knoxville will be his home for the time being, so be on the look out for him playing shows around town. You can also connect with him on Facebook.
