When I first heard The XX's album, XX, my favorite thing about it was the two-minute long intro simply entitled, "Intro." The rest of the record was great, but I couldn't help wishing that the entire thing was the same cloud-like synth, strong beat, and whispering guitar loops that made up the first two minutes.
Now, about five years later, the closest thing to that record that I really wanted has surfaced, and it comes from some young, local talent in evrgns. A moniker that was originally meant for a full rock band, evrgrns is now the creative name and outlet for the Knoxville-based musician and producer that simply goes by "Matty."
HELLOOO is a collection of seven somber hip-hop beats that could invite lyrics or stand on their own. For the time being, however, a few of the songs contain dialogue from different movies including Donnie Darko, which is a perfect choice for the tone of the record.
If you want to check out more evrgrns, you can listen to a bunch of different stuff on his Soundcloud and Bandcamp pages. There may be some new stuff coming in the not-so-distant future, as grns already has plans for his next tape which will be called "Purp" as well as a video for a version of his song, "Algernon" in which he raps on as well.
