Thanks again to Dominic Gillette for the interview!
Knoxville has hip-hop, and I'm continuing on my mission to prove it. Exhibit B: Dominic Gillette. One of the things that I love about Knoxville's budding hip-hop scene is that everyone that's out there making music is doing their own thing. Nobody sounds like anybody else. Dominic Gillette is definitely doing his own thing. He produces, records, and mixes all of his own songs, and in them there are many different sounds and effects that are diverse but distinctly Dominic. That's a quality that is lost on a lot of hip-hop acts. With technology being what it is today, many try to change their sound so much that it's often hard to tell the difference between an EP, an album, and a mix-tape. It's a balancing act that DG handles masterfully and partly a result of him producing his own beats. It should come as no surprise that Dominic's music is so multifaceted when you consider his assorted inspirations such as Bon Iver, Florence, Lana Del Ray, and Daft Punk just to name a few. "I feel like to be a good artist, you have to admire other genres than your own," DG precociously mentioned to me about his influences.
The song that's posted above is a single titled "System," and it hardly scratches the surface of Dominic's catalogue. He recently released Untitled, an album that was released under Hypr. Hypr, as Dominic described to me, is "an independent music distribution company" rather than the traditional definition of a label. It currently consists of Dominic Gillette and another local name you might recognize, Boss Awesome. However, they may very well be looking to expand here in the not-so-distant future.
DG is the second artist in as many days that I've interviewed that will be performing at the Knoxville Film And Music Festival. You can catch him performing at 90 Proof on one of the festival dates, so be on the lookout for the schedule. And be on the lookout for new music and some videos coming out from Dominic Gillette. There's a lot of cool things on the horizon for this dude. So be sure to keep your eyes peeled and be sure to follow Dominic on Twitter.
